In the UK, at least, you can do this on any phone by calling 2580 and letting the phone call capture 15-20 seconds of the song. You then get a text message with the song details a short while later. www.shazam.com

Absolutely amazing app. Driving down the road, we switched from station to station, sampling various genres of music, and it got 95% of the songs. The best part is that it keeps a log of the songs you sample, so that if you really like a song, you can buy it later (it'll link you to the iTunes Music Store from within the app). Great work, the designers must have an absolutely enormous database to provide the superfast results!

I actually needed to use this app the otherday and it payed off. Found the song from a movie i was watching that wasn't listed in the credits.

only complaint is that it does not know some of the more obscure stuff my friends listen to, but i don't blame it for not knowing some of that black metal stuff.

I'm kinda just waiting for the other shoe to drop...isn't this free app only free for a limited time? They charge money for this service. They're gonna start charging us at some point too, they even say it on their product page.

Shazam is ROCK! Really - only let me down one, when a very obscure DJ was mixing two songs parallel at a Booty Event but whenever I got my iPhone with me I'm never lost without knowing who's playing...
